a question, for those of you who have more experience with the system, what's a "fair" encounter consist of for a party of four or five 1st level characters?
is a single HD1 monster going to be a decent fight, or does the party just steamroller it?
are four or five HD1 monsters going to be a decent brawl, or a TPK?

Welcome to the forum! What is the party made up of? For example: you will want to challenge a group of all fighters differently than wizards. Overall without know party consistancy, or what types of gear they have, I would go with 2 1hd monsters as kind of a feeler encounter and add as appropriate.

Usualy when my group makes new characters I do a test run myself of 1-2 fights, if I am not improving, to see how they fair "in theory".

Hope that helped; if you need anything else we are all ready and willing!

I think they could go toe to toe with at least their equal in HD1 monsters..

thanks for the responses.  i'm adjusting a random dungeon generator, so i don't actually know what the party consists of.  Smiley
i just want to get close, the DM can always change things as necessary.  my current model is that 1d4+1 of an X HD monster
is fair game for a level X dungeon, with some encounters weaker than this baseline, and some stronger.

Did you make that generator? If so it is awesome and great job! I would say the formula sounds good; I might add "or 1d4+3 per advanced encounter." The second bit would account for those things the characters need either avoid or think around.

yeah.  i'd recently completed an overhaul of my d20 random generator (which i'm pretty sure a few people here are familiar with) for a 4e version.
and since that overhaul makes addtional versions pretty easy to implement, the microlite20 version.

cheers!

This is truly awesome! Thanks for sharing your creative works! If I may, and it is only a minor suggestion that some may agree or disagree with so implement it as you see or don't see fit, I would suggest that every entrance to a room does not need some form of 'doorway'. If you could add in the random use of no 'door' that would take it from 99.9% awesome to the 100% buttered toast rating for me (I love buttered toast BTW).

Now, questions: Will there be an off-line version? Will there be an option to chose a 'monster type' in the 'Motif' drop-down?

This is awesome!

doors; simple archways do sometimes show up in the dungeon.

off-line; probably not, sorry.  the generator relies on a megalithic back-end of code and data files
which must be constantly attended by enslaved adventurers.

monster type; monsters are selected by the dungeon level and motif, wherever possible.
where there are few appropriate monsters (level 1 giant dungeon), it goes to either
some filler monsters (goblins are found nearly everywhere),
higher or lower level monsters (watch out for 3HD shadows lurking on level 1 of the crypts of the undead),
or random monsters (inspired by lord greywulf's critters generator).

random monsters (inspired by lord greywulf's critters generator).

speaking of which, does anybody have a link to that? Or failing that, could drow manufacture a random critter generator independent of the dungeon generator?
