I recently picked up a copy of Twilight:2000 with some sweet tax return money.  It's definitely a system that had its heyday back in the days of the Cold War, since it was quite relative back in the 80s.

What games did you all like to play 'back in the day'?

Sadly, while the "80's" were part of my gaming hayday, or at least the start of a lifetime of gaming heydays, the only thing we played was D&D. I honestly do not remember playing any other RPG in that decade.

Sad, I know. But we loved us some D&D back in the day.

I hear ya.  My first, for-real, experiences with roleplaying was a D&D 4e campaign here on my campus back in September.  Lasted a month.  Then I found this site.  Then I found myRPG.  Then history began  Wink.

And, well, the 80s were before my time.  I'm a 90s child.  What are you gonna do?

I started off on pure home brews. playing, then later making them, without experience of a published game for the early years. I wonder how common this is? RPGs for me, are an oral tradition.

All we needed was a spiral notebook, some pencils, and dice. And soda. And chips. And The Wall.

I learned the principles of RPG from another kid who used to play under a GM that ran, i think, AD&D from memory. or some hombrew adaption thereof. my friend said there were no books involved, but came up with the the standard six ability scores.

Then we decided to take the plunge into D&D 3.5 circa... 2003-4. so pretty new to published stuff. used to just roll dice and argue with my friends. :-)

Ahh the trip down memory lane....  If I remember correctly it may have been late 88 or 89.  I was introduced to D&D by a friend and we got a small group together to play often. After the DM moved away we moved toward GURPS.  Then a long break occured and I found this site, while trying to figure out a system to get my kids interested in playing P&P RPG.

My parents brought me into role playing with 1e but then stopped playing. I ended up getting back into it with a white wolf game, then stepped up to BESM, and finally tried out 3e.

D&D and AD&D was probably the only game I played back then. I did play some car wars with some buddies from college. I actually really wanted to try Twilight 2000. The covers looked cool and I loved the 'near future' aspect of it.

I love you.  But seriously, I'm willing to get something rolling.  Character generation is a bit...comprehensive though, as is many factors of the game.  But it has grenade fishing, so it has to win right?

But on that note, chargen rolls itself (LITERALLY), so all you'd have to do is give me a name and a couple picks from the Career list and I can get the characters set before we do anything.  Scan the sheets and get 'em on Google Docs or something.  The system is a bit much to try and replicate on myRPG, so I might just run it in the chat here.

D'oh.  I forgot about skills and gear and stuff.  Whatever.

Looks like I picked up Twilight 2000 1e.  Upon some research, it looks like v2.2 is the best and easiest of all of them.  I can't "find" the v2.2 rules anywhere, so there's that.  I did purchase the Twilight Encounters source-book earlier, which gives the new 2.2 combat rules, so at least that's easier.

Belay the above.  I knew my good friend The Internet couldn't fail me.

My very first RPG experience was either "Toon" or "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness," both rulebooks of which I still own. Then it was on to the red box, and here we are.

Ah yes.  I have seen the titular red box in many stores, and it's called to me.  But my wallet usually calls louder.
