I'm working on a Microlite-based Legend of Zelda game to run with my kids. The basic premise is that Link has fallen and the people of Hyrule must fend for themselves to defeat Ganon. Anyone else out there interested in this? If so, I'll work on putting a PDF together, if not, I'll just leave it on my blog Smiley

It'd be dangerous to go alone.  I hope they have swords.  Wink

Thanks guys. I've been working on it all week. The biggest thing at this point is designing Hyrule into a playable form.

CharGen guidelines are up now on packofgnolls.blogspot.com

I thought I remember someone else working on something similar on here.  Might do a search and see if there's anything you could glean from that.

The Legend of Zelda is a great setting!  Hope your kids and you enjoy it.  I like how you pushed Link out of the spot light and made way for your player's characters to be the new heroes of the realm.  That was one issue I always had with TLoZ settings; I always thought of the player(s) being Link or other iconic characters which really limited the amount of players and a lot of characteristics already come with those characters which takes away from the player.  What you've done is simple genius; love it!

I think Empty was working on something if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the encouragment! I've been working a map of "my" Hyrule, and it's working out. The monsters are fairly straightforward to stat up; that's the easy part. The biggest trick with doing anything LoZ-related is making the "secrets" work. I read somewhere that the original LoZ had a secret on nearly every screen. I don't think that wound up actually being the case, but the possibility that a secret could be anywhere makes it feel like there are secrets everywhere, which fosters a sense of exploration and curiosity, which is a huge part of what I want to emulate.

The real trick is coming up with all the secrets! I don't want any of them to seem repetitive, so I've been mining information from all the different games. I also want most of them to be findable from the beginning, none of that "you can't get to that because you don't have item X" nonsense.

Anyways, it's coming along. I hope to put up a map soon on the blog, as well as more detailed item lists and plenty of more monsters.

I was. It was basically just Microing this sourcebook. It didn't work out.

Although I must admit that Gnolls' story hook is a bit more creative and interesting than mine ("It's post-OoT Zelda! Except ignoring the games that come chronologically afterward! Do stuff!")

Thanks for the link to that sourcebook, Empty. I'll have to download the document when i get home from work. Looks like it'll have plenty of info for me to incorporate.

No problem. It's a bit wonky design-wise IMO, but it's definitely got a lot of cool stuff to fiddle with.

I know there's a handful of other PDFs that, IIRC, were later versions (and distillations) of it, but I couldn't seem to find them. Honestly, it's a bit miraculous that the sourcebook I linked is even up given the fact that the site it's hosted on hasn't updated since 2007 (the forum, oddly, still had a tiny bit of conversation going sometime in 2010 before it closed, which is a bit annoying since I recall that there was some nifty stuff on there).

ive thought about this quite a bit in the past. If it were ME id just use the LoZ Map. Use every "frame" as an incriment (Day?) of travel, and use a random table to determine secrets.

Roll 3d4.
first die Do what: burn a bush, bomb a rock, blow the whistle, kill everything
second die Where: northern area, southern area, eastern eara, western area.
third die Earn: 25r, shop, 75r, special item

U could also use hexes and build your own map, creating your own random hex-generating tables.
Start with northern face of hex and roll 2d6, and move clockwise around the hex until all faces are described.
on the first die- 1,2,3 same as adjacent wall, 4, water, 5, trees, 6 stone.
on the 2nd die- 1,2,3, equal no passage, 4,5 equal passage area to adjcent hex, 6, secret passage to adjcent hex.

these are just spit balls...
you get the idea...
